Awards given at the StartAcademy & Networking Friday 2016

- Incubation & Office Space: TU Wien i²nkubator & Founder Space sponsored by The Innovation Incubation Center (i²c)
Winner: byrd

byrd is a logistics startup that allows customers to ship items via smartphone or via the byrd web app. They take care of pickup, packaging and shipment of the item at the best available rate. From now on, going to the post office is a thing of the past. Send items from your living room anytime you want.

i²c Award: Scholarship in the amount of € 5,000 for the commercialization of a high potential PhD-project (launched 2014 by Informatics Innovation Center)
Winner: Evologic

Bioprocess development to enable the economic use of fungi for natural yield increase in agriculture. Currently industrial agriculture allows pesticides to our plates while spoiling our environment with excess fertilizer. Nature actually has a solution: AMF - a symbiotic fungi. In symbiosis with crop plants AMF can decrease fertilizer and pesticide demand. But current AMF Products are simply too expensive. We as Evologic technologies are developing a scalable bioprocess which leads to significant cost reduction for the production of AMF. Achieving this goal will render the usage of AMF an imperative from an economic and an ecologic point of view - for the sake of our food and our environment.

INiTS Startup Camp (worth € 6,000)
Winners: Jumpy & Crispi

Jumpy – A simulator for flying in virtual environments. The Jumpcube gives you wings. It allows you to jump out of a plane, fly through the air like a bird, dive down into the sea and fight with the creatures of the dark. It allows you to travel through space and time. All this in virtual reality with free body movement, enriched by touch and smell.

CrysPi – Production of high-performance-polymers (polyimides) of outstanding crystallinity. High-performance polymers (HPPs) are plastics of outstanding mechanical, thermal and chemical stability. They find use in applications where low weight matters and demanding conditions arise, e.g., in aviation, space technology and microelectronics. The exceptional materials properties of HPPs increase with crystallinity. We have developed a technique to prepare a highly important type of HPPs – polyimides (PIs) – of unprecedented crystallinity. In addition, our technique is much less harmful than conventional preparations for PIs: we use nothing but water, heat and the starting chemicals. Crystalline PIs would allow for generating even better performing HPP materials for numerous high-end applications. With CRYSPI, we envision to manufacture outstandingly crystalline and thus stable polyimides by our novel environmentally friendly procedure.

WKO Pitching-Workshop with Steve Austin (San Francisco)
Winner: JustMe

The new generation camera app, that allows you to take photos of beautiful places without capturing disturbing moving objects. JustMe is a camera application of a new generation. It allows to create photos in a completely new way. Thanks to this application vacation photos of beautiful places can be taken without recording distracting or moving objects such as for example persons or cars. A clever algorithm detects moving objects, deletes them and fills-up the spots with real background. Although everything is fully automated.

CONDA Award
Winner: FearlessLife

Providing safety and peace of mind for older adults and their care-taker. The fearless Life Comfort System1 monitors elderly people at home, in homes for elderly or assisted living facilities and detects falls without any interaction of the elderly. Hence, no button need to be pushed and no device need to be worn any longer. The fearless system is the only contactless product on the market and outperforms fall mattresses, panic buttons or wearable accelerometers in terms of robustness. Using their novel 3D analytic software together with mass market 3D sensors and single board computers they track humans and detect events within a range of 10 m to the sensor. Thus allows to model and detect abnormal behavior, allowing for e.g. an early detection of dementia.

Commercial Viability Award: Starup300 investment (worth 10 000€)

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY AWARD: AAIA Pitch and Network Support
Winner: HOBBIT - the home roboter
(Michael Zillich, Lara Lammer, Georg Melzer - Faculty of Electrical Engineering & Faculty of Informatics)

Injuries suffered by a fall cause 60% of care facility admissions. The main cause for a fall is tripping, dehydration and forgetting medication, all of which can be avoided by a home robot. The reason why robots are not in homes right now is the high price of robots and low acceptance by users. We have developed a low price robot (priced at € 15k) and a scientifically proven concept, based on mutual care between the elderly and the robot, to dramatically increase the acceptance for robots at home.

AWARD FOR THE BEST OVERALL CONCEPT: INiTS Startup Camp
Winner: Radiology Image Search
(Markus Holzer, Georg Langs: Faculty of Informatics & MedUni)

A medical image search engine for radiologists. It gives them easy access to otherwise unused imaging data and expert knowledge relevant to their diagnosis. The data is accumulated in hospitals with a rate of appr. 250.000 cases/year. Fast image search helps radiogists to speed up their work in clinical routine, research and teaching, who would otherwise have to search through books, or chase colleagues.

HIGH POTENTIAL R&D AWARD: € 3000 Realization Grant ("Verwertungsstipendium") sponsored by i²c
Winner: StrikeSensor
(Lisa Madlberger: Faculty of Informatics)

Labor strikes are signals of social unrest and cause disruptions in companies' supply chains. Currently there is no data source which provides up-to-date information on strike events. StrikeSensor uses an analytical model to detect labor strikes around the world based on Twitter data and extracts event information in real-time. Companies with large supply chain networks can use this data-as-a-service to improve decision making and avoid disruptions. The multi-lingual event-detection model at the core of StrikeSensor can be trained to detect other types of events in the future.

CONDA CROWDINVESTING AWARD: Product place on the CONDA Crowdinvesting Platform
Winner: CloudFleet (Dražen Lučanin, Christoph Witzany: Faculty of Informatics)

A plug&play personal data center for secure and private cloud services. Why use clouds that spy on your data and sell information to advertisment companies when you can afford your own data center?! The CloudFleet Blimp is a device that you place in your home and it enables you to communicate securely via email, manages your files, calendar and contacts. It is easy to use from anywhere, keeps your personal data safe and will grow into a smart personal assistant.
